Fans, Contestants Converge for San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo

Bull Rider Rodeo Set for Feb. 16-26
Livestock Show Begins Feb. 12

One of the Top 5 rodeos in the nation based on total purse, and celebrating its 80th year of existence, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo brings over 1,000 top PRCA cowboys and cowgirls to the Concho Valley every year. The people of San Angelo are no strangers to rodeo as they are deeply rooted in the sport. San Angelo has been coined a “Cowboy Town” not because of two weeks dedicated to cowboys and cowgirls in February, but because year-round, that is what San Angeloans do.

Unique to 2012 is the addition of a 10th performance, the “Cinch Shoot Out,” with invitational contestants picked from the five events of bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and calf roping.  This new, action packed event will take place as the ending performance on the night of Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. and the title sponsor is Cinch Clothing.

Winners vie for their share of $10,000 dollars prize money in each event. Champions from the PRCA Rodeo on Saturday afternoon will earn invitations to compete in the rodeo events in Houston in March of 2012 and then compete in the Houston Super Shoot Out in March 2013. As Houston is an invitational rodeo, a win in San Angelo is HUGE as the event winners earn an invite to compete in the Super Series and Super Shootout at Reliant Stadium.

While the frenzy of rodeo time often headlines the news, it is important to see the purpose behind the rodeo and stock show.  In 2002, the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association continued its tradition of serving West Texas and area youth by funding the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation, a 501(C3) charitable organization. The mission of the foundation is to manage the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Association scholarship funds, benefitting the future growth of the Association.

Because of the success of the Stock Show and Rodeo and, most importantly, the generosity of local friends and businesses charitable and memorial giving, the Foundation has grown to a multimillion dollar benefit program helping students lighten the burden of continuing education. The San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Foundation is excited to report on its 10 year anniversary. The Foundation has been the driving force in allowing the Stock Show and Rodeo Association to award more than $1 million to area youth in scholarships.

Barrel Racer As the third largest livestock show in the state and fouth largest in the nation, based on total entries, the San Angelo Stock Show hosts 4,500 exhibitors, 40 shows and contests and continues growing annually.

So, what exactly attracts the livestock exhibitors to this West Texas town, besides the West Texas Hospitality and laid back atmosphere?  A main factor is the Premium Sale where businesses, individuals, and ranches congratulate and reward students for their hard work with their projects. From more than 5,200 entries in the market livestock shows, 196 head are selected for the Premium Sale.

In San Angelo, 100 percent of the money raised for the sale goes into the pockets of the youth that qualify. The job of accounting, tracking winners, weights, shipping and paying out thousands of dollars is done without taking a penny out of Premium Sale donations.  The Premium Sale is held the final Saturday of the Stock Show and Rodeo at 4 p.m. in the Sale Pavilion.

The 80th Annual San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo is going to be one for the record books. More than 900 volunteers are donating their time and effort into making this one of the best events ever.  It’s over two weeks of fun and entertainment you don’t want to miss!
